The major disillusion concerning entrance into the program involves the cost of the instruments and lessons. The lessons are given free, but the school does not provide the instruments free of charge.
For the band program, rental agreements have been made through an outside rental company. There are also a limited amount of school instruments available. If you are remotely convinced that your child will want to play an instrument, please return this form as soon as possible. Instruments that are ordered before summer are guaranteed to be at school August 23rd. Due to the demand, instruments that are ordered in the beginning of the school year may take a few weeks to receive.
There are three ways to obtain an instrument for the school music program. The first way is through the Booster Club. These instruments must be returned at the end of the academic year. The instruments the school has for rent are:
Clarinet $ 75
Alto Saxophone $ 75
Oboe $ 75
Trumpet, Flute, $ 75
Trombone, Baritone Horn, French Horn $ 40
Bass Clarinet, Tenor Saxophone $ 40
Percussion Kits $ 75
The instruments leased are not superior in quality but are good for a first year student and/or families on a budget. These prices are for the full academic year, include the book/reed fee, and must be returned at the beginning of June.
The second way to obtain an instrument is directly through a music company. A representative from John Keal Music in Albany, services the Lansingburgh school district. This company is not an option for many, but certainly the most convenient of them all. The rental prices and contract details are available online at www.johnkealmusic.com. This method is a bit more expensive and requires a credit check, but you will receive a better quality instrument and you will own the instrument after the contract is up. This method is suggested for the students that have proven their interest in the instrument and the band program. Northeast Music in Latham is another reputable dealer.
The third way to obtain an instrument is by purchase. There are many places that sell instruments, but you must be careful that you don’t buy an inferior instrument. John Keal Music, Northeast Music, Cole’s Woodwind Shop, and Craigslist are your best options. The only brands of instruments that are worth purchasing are Yamaha, Bundy, Gemeinhardt, Artley, Jupiter, Olds, Armstrong, Bach, Selmer, King, Pearl, Vito, and Conn. Any other brand should be checked with Mr. Rowlands. Do not purchase an instrument from a department store, as these are mass produced instruments that break easily, are hard to play, and are very costly to continually repair.
Instruments are in high demand in the beginning of the school year and I urge you to complete this form ASAP. The assignment of instruments will be based on a first come – first paid basis.
Enrollment in the band program requires the students to be responsible and respectful. The student must attend all lessons, which are given during the day on a rotating basis unless there is a legitimate excuse, such as a test or medical appointment. After school band will begin immediately for the returning band students from last year. Beginners will start band when the instructor feels he/she is able to succeed. This policy allows the students to be rewarded early if they work hard. If the child does not reach a certain level of achievement they will not be allowed to join the after school band. If the child has three unexcused absences from band they will be terminated from after school band. If a child has a conflict with a rehearsal, such as computer club, art club, etc, please contact me for alternatives.
If you are interested in enrolling your child in the instrumental program, please complete the forms provided and return it to your child’s classroom teacher ASAP. If there are any questions please contact me at school.
