I WOULD LIKE TO WELCOME YOU AND YOUR SON/DAUGHTER TO THE LANSINGBURGH CENTRAL SCHOOL MUSIC PROGRAM. IT IS THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT’S SINCERE DESIRE THAT THE STUDENT GROW BOTH MUSICALLY AND INTELLECTUALLY THROUGH PARTICIPATION IN AN OUTSTANDING MUSICAL PROGRAM.
THIS MUSIC STUDENT MANUAL IS DESIGNED TO INFORM YOU AND YOUR SON/DAUGHTER OF MUSIC DEPARTMENT POLICIES. THESE GUIDELINES HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED TO DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN CONSISTENCY AND EXCELLENCE WITHIN THE PROGRAM. NTHE MANUAL WILL ALSO INFORM YOU OF WHAT WE EXPECT FROM THE STUDENT AND PARENT, AND WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT.

PRACTICE
1. AT HOME PRACTICE – ALL STUDENTS 4-12, ARE EXPECTED TO PRACTICE AT LEAST 5 DAYS A WEEK, FOR 20 MINUTES. (BEGINNERS WILL START WITH 15 MINUTES FOR THE FIRST FEW WEEKS).
A. SELECT A TIME OF DAY AND PLACE THAT WILL BE AS FREE AS POSSIBLE FROM DISTRACTIONS. IN ORDER TO ESTABLISH A ROUTINE, TRY TO USE THE SAME TIME EVERY DAY.
B. SET A GOAL: JUST WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH THIS PRACTICE PERIOD?
C. CORRECT POSTURE IS A MUST. USE A STRAIGHT BACK CHAIR AND A MUSIC STAND. IT IS ALSO ADVANTAGEOUS TO PRACTICE STRAIGHT UP.
D. USE A MIRROR ON A REGULAR BASIS TO CHECK PROPER POSTURE, HAND POSITION, AND EMBOUCHURE (PROPER PLACEMENT OF LIPS, CHIN, TEETH, ETC.).
E. WARMING UP IS IMPORTANT! BEFORE PLAYING ANY ASSIGNED EXCERCISES, YOU MUST WARM UP AS INSTRUCTED BY YOUR TEACHER.
F. PLAYING THROUGH A SONG OR EXERCISE IS NOT PRACTICING. YOU MUST WORK ON THE PARTS YOU NEED TO PLAY BETTER.
G. WHEN PROBLEMS ARE ENCOUNTERED, BE PATIENT … DON’T GIVE UP! WORK ON A PARTICULAR PIECE SECTION BY SECTION; FIRST VERY SLOWLY, THEN GRADUALLY INCREASE THE TEMPO. WHEN IT IS FINALLY PLAYED CORRECTLY, GO BACK AND PLAY IT AGAIN … CORRECTLY.
H. IF AT ANY TIME YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND SOMETHING, PLEASE SEE YOUR TEACHER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL YOUR NEXT LESSON!

PROPER BEHAVIOR AND ATTITUDE DURING REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES IS VERY IMPORTANT. STUDENTS SHOULD CONSIDER IT A PRIVELAGE TO PERFORM IN A VERY FINE MUSIC PROGRAM AND WILL THEREFORE CONDUCT THEMSELVES APPROPRIATELY.

LESSON SCHEDULE AND ATTENDANCE
1. A WEEKLY LESSON SCHEDULE WILL BE POSTED AND DISTRIBUTED. STUDENTS WILL BE INSTRUCTED IN READING IT CORRECTLY. THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR KNOWING WHEN THEIR LESSONS ARE.
CLASSROOM WORK
SWITCHING INSTRUMENTS
SWITCHING INSTRUMENTS (I.E. CHANGING FROM CLARINET TO TROMBONE) WILL ONLY OCCUR WITH THE BAND DIRECTOR’S PERMISSION. STUDENTS THAT CHANGE INSTRUMENTS, WITHOUT THE PERMISSION OF THE BAND DIRECTOR, WILL BE DROPPED FROM THE PROGRAM.
BECAUSE OF A LACK OF CERTAIN TYPES OF INSTRUMENTS WITHIN THE BAND, THE DIRECTOR MAY REQUEST A STUDENT TO PERFORM ON A DIFFERENT INSTRUMENT. CHANGES WILL ONLY BE MADE WHEN THEY WILL BENEFIT BOTH THE STUDENT AND THE BAND.
GENERALLY, STUDENTS WILL BE ASKED TO SWITCH INSTRUMENTS WHEN A SCHOOL INSTRUMENT IS AVAILABLE, OR WHEN THE PARENTS/GUARDIANS ARE WILLING TO PURCHASE AND/OR RENT ANOTHER INSTRUMENT.
ATTENDANCE
1. LESSONS – ALL INSTRUMENTAL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND GROUP LESSONS ON A ONCE A WEEK BASIS. THE INSTRUMENT, LESSON BOOK, AND A PENCIL MUST BE BROUGHT TO EVERY LESSON. PERCUSSION STUDENTS SHOULD BRING PRACTICE PAD, DRUM STICKS/MALLETS, LESSON BOOK, AND A PENCIL TO EACH LESSON.
REGULAR ATTENDANCE IS VERY IMPORTANT. MISSING A LESSON (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ILLNESS, ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL, TEACHER/PRINCIPAL CONFERENCE, OR TESTING) WILL RESULT IN A LETTER GRADE OF “F” FOR THAT LESSON. FORGETTING TO ATTEND A LESSON IS NO EXCUSE!!!!
WHEN A STUDENT KNOWS IN ADVANCE THAT HE/SHE WILL MISS A LESSON (BECAUSE OF A FIELD TRIP, CLASS PRESENTATION, A TEST, ETC.) HE/SHE MUST INFORM THE MUSIC TEACHER NO LATER THAN BEFORE SCHOOL THAT DAY. THE STUDENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL MATERIAL AND ASSIGNMENTS GIVEN AT THE LESSON.
MAKE UP LESSONS WILL BE GIVEN AT THE DISCRETION ON THE MUSIC TEACHER. GENERALLY, LESSONS THAT ARE MISSED BECAUSE OF HOLIDAYS WILL NOT BE MADE UP.
WHEN A LESSON IS RESCHEDULED, THE MAKE UP TIME WILL BE MUTUALLY CONVENIENT FOR THE MUSIC TEACHER, STUDENT, AND THE CLASSROOM TEACHER.
THE LESSON GROUPS WILL BE ASSIGNED IN SEPTEMBER. THE LESSON GROUPS MAY CHANGE DUE TO THE ACHIEVEMENT. THE LESSON GROUPS WILL THEN BE PLACED ON A ROTATING SCHEDULE. THE ROTATION ASSURES THAT THE STUDENT WILL NOT MISS THE SAME CLASS TWICE IN A ROW. PLEASE REMEMBER TO ALWAYS CHECK THE LESSON SCHEDULE POSTED IN THE MUSIC AREA.
STUDENTS ARE REMINDED TO INFORM THEIE TEACHERS OF A MUSIC LESSON IN ADVANCE. ASSIGNMENTS THAT ARE DUE IN CLASS THE SAME PERIOD AS THE LESSON MUST BE TURNED THE DAY THAT THEY ARE DUE. STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO KEEP UP THEIR CLASSWORK AND MAINTAIN GOOD GRADES IN OTHER SUBJECTS.
PRIVATE LESSONS OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL SUPPLEMENT THE SCHOOL’S GROUP LESSONS NICELY-BUT THEY WILL NOT TAKE THE PLACE OF THE GROUP LESSON. THERE ARE MANY QUALIFIED PRIVATE INSTRUCTORS IN THE AREA. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN FINDING A PRIVATE TEACHER FOR YOUR SON/DAUGHTER, PLEASE CONTACT THE BAND DIRECTOR FIRST. THE DIRECTOR WILL TRY TO GUIDE YOU TO A GOOD INSTRUCTOR. SUMMER LESSONS ARE OFFERED THROUGH PITCH AND THE LANSINGBURGH BAND BOOSTERS. THESE LESSONS ARE GIVEN THROUGH THE FIRST THREE WEEKS OF JULY.
2. REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES – ALL BAND MEMBERS WILL BE PRESENT FOR ALL REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES UNLESS OTHERWHISE CLEARED WITH THE INSTRUCTOR. IF YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF A BAND MEMBER, YOU ARE THEN RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL FUNCTIONS OF THE BAND. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A PART-TIME MEMBERSHIP. THREE UNEXCUSED ABSENCES WILL RESULT IN THE STUDENT NOT PERFORMING THE CONCERT.
PLEASE BE CAREFUL PLANNING EVENTS. STUDENTS WILL BE NOTIFIED WELL IN ADVANCE OF MUSIC DEPARTMENT EVENTS. PLEASE REFER TO THE DISTRICT CALENDAR FOR EVENTS SCHEDULED.
REHEARSALS AFTER SCHOOL ARE NOT AN OPTION! AN AFTER SCHOOL BAND REHEARSAL WILL NEVER BE SCHEDULED AS FORM OF PUNISHMENT. ALL REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES ARE TO BE A VERY POSITIVE EXPERIENCE IN THAT THE STUDENT GROWS MUSICALLY AND BETTER HIS/HER PERFORMANCE SKILLS. IN THE EVENT OF AN UNSCHEDULED REHEARSAL/PERFORMANCE, ADVANCE NOTIFICATION WILL BE GIVEN AND ATTENDANCE WILL BE MANDATORY.

IF YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF A BAND MEMBER, YOU ARE THEN RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL FUNCTIONS OF THE BAND. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A PART-TIME MEMBERSHIP. THREE UNEXCUSED ABSENCES WILL RESULT IN THE STUDENT NOT PERFORMING THE CONCERT.
PLEASE BE CAREFUL PLANNING EVENTS. STUDENTS WILL BE NOTIFIED WELL IN ADVANCE OF MUSIC DEPARTMENT EVENTS. PLEASE REFER TO THE DISTRICT CALENDAR FOR EVENTS SCHEDULED.
REHEARSALS AFTER SCHOOL ARE NOT AN OPTION! AN AFTER SCHOOL BAND REHEARSAL WILL NEVER BE SCHEDULED AS FORM OF PUNISHMENT. ALL REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES ARE TO BE A VERY POSITIVE EXPERIENCE IN THAT THE STUDENT GROWS MUSICALLY AND BETTER HIS/HER PERFORMANCE SKILLS. IN THE EVENT OF AN UNSCHEDULED REHEARSAL/PERFORMANCE, ADVANCE NOTIFICATION WILL BE GIVEN AND ATTENDANCE WILL BE MANDATORY.
